A Little Knowledge is a Dangerous Thing

a little knowledge is a dangerous thing

The phrase is usually quoted as A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it may have originated as “a little learning is a dangerous thing”:

Here is part of “An Essay on Criticism” by Alexander Pope

A little learning is a dangerous thing;
drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring:
there shallow draughts intoxicate the brain,
and drinking largely sobers us again.

The implication is that a small amount of knowledge can lead to overconfidence, leaping to invalid conclusions based on what you do know without taking into account the things that you don’t know. (FAILING TO SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE) It’s contrasted with a large amount of knowledge, which would presumably lead one to be more cautious or to at least draw better conclusions.
It’s not generally intended to imply that even a “little knowledge is a dangerous thing”. In the phrase’s terms, more is definitely better.

So what’s the point of this post and why do I mention it? Well you’ll be surprised how many discussions I have with people from all walks of life not just the marketing world about an array of subjects. You know the type of people, who dismiss the information given to them based on what they think they know vs what they’re results say.

So if you are one of these people,

Why A little knowledge is a dangerous thing!

Having a little knowledge on a topic can lead to thinking that you know more than you really do and can lead to decisions being made that are not the best or can cost you a lot of money!

A little knowledge can lead to:

  • Assumptions – thinking you know why something is happening and making hasty decisions to change.
  • Shiny object syndrome – being quick to jump onto the latest ‘shiny’ thing.

How can you avoid this situation?

  • State your goals very specifically – what end result do you want?
  • Remember that you go to a Dr because they’re a specialist – it’s the same for advice for your website!
  • Ask questions – “I want this to do this, what is the best next step?”
  • Realise that by doing it yourself instead of paying someone with expertise, it may cost you a whole lot more in terms of your time and then needing to get an expert to fix it.
  • Be open to advice from others.

So there you have it, I hope you got value, From this post on A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. If so, I would greatly appreciate if you commented below with your thoughts and shared on social media. Also remember to subscribe to keep updated on my latest content.
